How much should I give my horse?

The doses are different for each product. An overview of all dosages for each type of horse can be found in the details of each individual product in the product line.
Or just click on: DOSAGES and RATIONS

Are the Equilin products eaten well?

Due to the relatively high concentrations of the ingredients in the products and no unnatural flavorings are added, horses may have to get used to the taste. 90% of the horses usually eat them without any problems after getting used to them. That is why it is recommended to start by mixing a little (max 1/5 measuring cup) and gradually build up to the build-up dose. The products can then be mixed with the normal feed for example with mash or other favorite food. The tasty feed can then be slowly reduced again.

How long should the BASICS be given before effect becomes visible?

The effect is usually noticeable within 3 to 5 weeks. This requires 2 packs of 6 kg. If no changes occur at all during this period, it is advisable to do additional research with a vet for an underlying cause. For this you can also contact us. Furthermore, the products can only work if the amounts of sugar, starch and fructan are below a reasonable minimum. In combination with more than 3 kilos of concentrates and unfertilized roughage, the results will be minimal.

You can find more information about the BASICS here.

How can BASICS be fed in combination with BALANCER?

If BALANCER is fed in addition to the roughage: daily without concentrate or in part of the dosage with less than 2.5 kg of concentrate. Then BASIC can also be dosed differently. You can feed ± 35 grams less BASIC (only with the high maintenance dose) per 100 grams of BALANCER. IMMUNO does not require a BALANCER during build-up dose if there is no suspected mineral deficiency.

However, horses that have not been given any additional minerals in addition to roughage for more than a month may already have a mineral deficiency.

You can find the product specifications in the details of each individual product in the product line.

Why does BASIC and COMFORT not also contain all vitamins and minerals?

The BASIC and COMFORT formulas are composed in such a way that it can be given with any ration without the risk of overdose. If only roughage is given, it depends on the quality of the roughage whether this is complete. As a rule, analysis will show that a separate vitamin and mineral preparation or concentrate must be given. A roughage analysis provides the answer. If no roughage analysis is available, we assume that a theoretical mineral deficiency can occur under 2.5 kg of concentrates and the BALANCER can then be a good addition.

While IMMUNO does contain the minerals needed daily during the build-up dose, at the lower dose it is advisable to add 60% BALANCER if no other concentrate feed is given.

You can find the product specifications in the details of each individual product in the product line. You can find more information about the BASICS here.

Why can’t IMMUNO and COMFORT be fed continuously?

If supplements contain herbs, a stopping period should always be inserted to prevent habituation. The herbs otherwise lose their effectiveness and will have to be given more and more to achieve the desired result. IMMUNO contains nettle and milk thistle, which become less effective after 6 to 8 weeks. It is then advisable to give BASIC for 14 to 30 days and then continue with IMMUNO if necessary. The same applies to COMFORT.

You can find the product specifications in the details of each individual product in the product line. You can find more information about the BASICS here.

Are there any known side effects when using Equilin products?

Horses with kidney problems may not be able to excrete an excess of magnesium, which can lead to dangerous levels in the blood. Horses with kidney failure are usually really sick. When in doubt, always consult the vet.

In principle, all ingredients of the Equilin products are safe at the indicated dosage. But individual hypersensitivity reactions to certain ingredients can occur.

Symptoms such as mild colic and drowsiness may occur in the first few weeks. These usually disappear within two to three weeks. Let horses with intestinal complaints get used to EquilinBASIC’s in 7 days (every day max 50 gram added to daily dosis). After that, you can start with the regular build-up dose.

An allergic reaction to nettle can occur in a very small number of horses, so-called. Nettle rash (estimated 1 in 10.000 horses). These are small bumps under the coat, which normally disappear within 24 hours. Nettle is added to Immuno, if this occurs stop feeding and/or switch to BASIC.

If you have any questions about this, please contact us at: info@equilin.eu

Is Equilin doping and medication free?

All ingredients used in the Equilin® products are* doping free. This means that no raw materials are used that are known to result in positive doping results under the FEI regulations. Or which are expected to lead to positive doping results in the near future, this is the case, for example, with various herbal preparations (passion flower, guarana, gingseng, etc.). It is not recommended to feed sport horses more than 3 kg of alfalfa per day, in view of the threshold value for salicylic acid. National regulations may deviate from the FEI, it is the rider’s and/or trainer’s responsibility to be aware of them.

* excluding EquilinCOMFORT;
The FEI recommends a waiting period of 2 days before competition for most herbal supplements, herbs are not included in the ‘Prohibited Substances‘ list. If COMFORT is given, it is then possible to switch to BASIC in a slightly higher dosage possibly with a stomach protective agent such as sucralfate.

Equilin and other supplements

In principle, Equilin products are safe and can usually be fed with other supplements, provided they do not contain the same ingredients in high doses. It is then double because it usually has no additional effect. With selenium, do not feed too much per day If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact us at: info@equilin.eu

Equilin and veterinary treatments

The Equilin products do not replace therapy. Always consult your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. Always inform them of the use of the Equilin products in case of necessary veterinary procedures. With most regular therapies, the Equilin products will have a supportive effect. The final decision on this is up to the attending veterinarian, but you can always contact us at info@equilin.eu

During pregnancy

BASIC is a good supplement for pregnant mares. Magnesium in particular has a positive influence on the bones and joints of both the mare and the foal. In the case of a magnesium deficiency, the magnesium is released from the mare’s bones, this is accompanied by the release of calcium and phosphorus, which results in osteoporosis. Both the mare and foal will develop stronger bones with magnesium supplementation.

In addition, it has been scientifically proven that the addition of DHA omega 3 fatty acids from algae and/or fish oil (also from linseed, but this is much less efficient) during pregnancy and lactation results in stronger offspring that develop faster.

It is important that the mare receives sufficient available copper and selenium from the start of the pregnancy. BALANCER contains these minerals in a dosage of 125%. During the last 4 months of pregnancy, the calcium/phosphorus requirement shoots up sharply, so we advise adding GROW. BASIC can also be given.

——

ADVICE GROW DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

From the last 4 months of pregnancy: 45 g /100 kg and 200 g lucerne / per 100 kg horse, possibly in combination with BASIC

During pregnancy: 45 g /100 kg horse

During lactation: +/- 50% recommended mare feed

IMMUNO is not suitable for pregnant and lactating mares (first 3 months) due to increased excretion of waste products.

Why is there no Selenium in Equilin products? This is in many other supplements with vitamin E.

Selenium is usually contained in sufficient quantities in the concentrates, but less and less in the roughage. Adding extra selenium in the form of supplements can be toxic and it is difficult for us as a producer to estimate the amount a horse will receive in its total ration. Complete coverage without an overdose of selenium can therefore not be given in a standard product and should therefore always be determined according to the total ration. Selenium is usually not a problem if more than 3 kg of concentrate is given.

BALANCER, IMMUNO and GROW contain a decent dose of easily absorbable selenium and can be added daily, a few days a week or in half a dose as desired and depending on the concentrate dose.

The symptoms of an acute selenium overdose are:

  • Temporary blindness, colic, diarrhea, shaking, pain, increased pulse and breathing, sweating, feeling unwell.

This acute risk is run when a horse ingests more than 40 mcg/ kg of body weight (horse 600 kg it is 25mg).

The symptoms of a chronic (ie long-term) overdose are:

  • Loss of hair from the mane and tail, loosening of the hoof wall.

A horse is at risk of chronic overdose if it ingests more than 6 mg/ day over a longer period of time.

Selenium deficiency (today very common in horses and ponies without forage supplementation):

  • Resistance problems;
  • Muscle stiffness, problems with the coat, loss of color

You can find the product specifications in the details of each individual product in the product line.

What is the difference between pre- and probiotics?

Prebiotics are actually nothing but dietary fibers, which are found in normal roughage. But there are many different dietary fibers, different herbs and grasses have them slightly different again. That is also why a biodiverse ration (many different types of grasses and weeds) creates a biodiverse microbiome (intestinal flora). Also pectin, FOS, inulin are all different types of dietary fiber/ prebiotics so, food for the beneficial gut bacteria.

Probiotics are a bit different, these are living organisms that influence gut flora. Good bacteria can attach there and you give them temporarily. Live yeasts (which we use in the products) do not. These raise the pH but will disappear from the intestines again over time. If the gut flora is repeatedly fed our rich roughage. Or is affected by, for example, illness, dehydration, deworming, etc., effective support remains desirable, especially for horses with sensitive gut reactions.

Why aren’t there cheaper larger packs?

What happens when we start putting the products in bulk packaging, as a rule, half-empty feed barrels/carts are also handled more carelessly. This does not benefit the quality of the products with expensive raw materials. Now, exactly 1 bag always fits in a bucket, it is usually completely emptied and you always have a fresh quality product.

Starting from 3 bags of supplements, we offer an additional 10% discount to accommodate larger volume purchases.

We believe it’s important that as an applicant for sponsorship, you support/promote our vision on horse welfare and nutrition. It’s even better if you already have experience with Equilin products.
