Back to the natural roughage requirement
Five years ago, the roughage norm was still 1 kg of hay per 100 kg of body weight per day. The ration had to be supplemented with kilograms of concentrate feed to obtain sufficient nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Now we know better! Scientific research has since shown that this is outdated. And that a horse needs at least double the amount of roughage to keep its body healthy and have a contented feeling. Naturally, a horse even eats much more roughage.
And that means that when a horse receives double the amount of roughage; their sugar- and protein intake also double. This casts a new light on feeding concentrates. The necessary additions to the roughage need to be adjusted, so the intestinal flora can be balanced and the horse or pony does not become overweight, while still feeling fit and healthy.

Roughage alone does not contain all the necessary nutrients and can be a cause of disrupted intestinal flora.
A predominantly roughage-based diet lacks sufficient minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin E, which is generally not present in adequate amounts in dried roughage. A roughage-based diet can also disrupt intestinal flora, for example, if it is too rich, too moist, or contains too much mold.
