Nutrition for horses

Do you sometimes feel lost with the wide range of horse feeds available and the conflicting advice of ‘specialists’ and well-meaning stable mates?
You are not the only one feeling completely overwhelmed by this wide range of different types of feed, supplements, contradictory advice and tall tales.

But where can you find the right information about nutrition?

Fortunately, Dr. Annette van Weezel Errens has made it a lot easier for us. Over the past 15 years, she has used her extensive experience as a nutritional developer, groom, horse owner, and student of veterinary medicine as well as many conferences on nutrition, to develop her vision from this enormous mountain of information, research, and the veritable maze of different studies and opinions; ‘The New Feeding Concept’ simplifies proper nutrition again.

‘The New Feeding Concept’ is a must-have guide for every horse owner. Compiling a horse’s diet properly is a skill. This book is your guide in your search for the right nutrition for your horse.

‘A free tool’ for nutritional guidance

Check out this incredibly useful download https://equilin.eu/voedingswijzer/
It is a step-by-step guide into ‘The New Feeding Concept’ that will help you find your way through the jungle of information about equine nutrition. You can fill this in directly online, but you can also download it for free.

The feed pyramid

The feed pyramid provides a simple and clear insight into the ratios of the various components in a diet.
As a rule, all feed types, with the exception of oils, are made up of all layers of the feed pyramid; water, fibres, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals and any other substances or additives. Putting together a suitable diet is therefore all about putting together all the different types of food that will together meet the horse’s needs.
The food pyramid includes 3 rules regarding nutrition (see image).

The first layer of the pyramid: water

Facts about water;

  • Is vitally important
  • Is necessary to maintain fluid balance
  • Transports nutrients
  • 70% of the horse’s body consists of water
  • Horses drink an average of 25 to 50 liters per day

What you should pay attention to when giving water;

  • Water should be fresh and free of contaminants such as Legionella, E. coli, iron or other chemicals (e.g. drug residues or lead from old lead pipes)
  • When in doubt, have the water checked by a specialised laboratory (e.g. Animal Health Service)
  • The book ‘The New Feeding Concept’ contains tips and photos on how to check your horse’s fluid balance.

The second layer of the pyramid: fibres

Facts about nutritional fibre;

  • Is the crude fibre plus the other carbohydrates, minus the sugars and the starches
  • Consists mainly of lignin, pectin, hemicellulose and cellulose
  • Contains all carbohydrates that the horse’s own digestive enzymes cannot break down themselves, such as fructan
  • A horse needs 1,5% per day in dry matter of fibrous roughage
  • Crude fibre is actually prebiotics

Effects of a high nutritional fibre diet;

  • A lot of structure in the food > which means better chewing
  • A large volume of chyme > increases intestinal movement and the secretion of digestive juices
  • A high passage speed > much and frequent defecation
  • Healthier intestinal flora > forms a barrier against pathogenic micro-organisms in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Offers protection against a number of toxic substances in the food
  • Stimulates a feeling of satiety > maximum energy absorption is limited because the horse stops eating

The third layer of the pyramid: proteins

It is a myth that proteins are bad for a horse. Proteins are an essential part of the daily ration because;

  • They serve as building material for the cells
  • They are part of many enzymes that are essential for the production of (muscle) tissue in the body
  • The diet should contain sufficient energy (nutritional fibre and carbohydrates) > to avoid protein turnover (the horse ‘consuming’ their own body protein/muscles)

Facts about protein;

  • Too much protein is not good > the body has to secrete this, putting unnecessary strain on the liver
  • The amount of protein in a food which is actually absorbed called DCP Horse (VREp)
  • Are built up from amino acids > Essential Amino Acids (must be present in the diet) and the non-essential amino acids (the horse is able to synthesise these from other amino acids)

The fourth layer of the pyramid: fats and oils

Facts about fats and oils;

    ● The body can absorb fatty acids in two ways to serve as energy for the horse. 1. In the small intestine, by feeding oils and foods that are rich in fats. 2. In the caecum and large intestine after the crude fibre has been converted into volatile fatty acids by beneficial bacteria

  • A horse can digest up to 20% of the dry matter in their feed in fats
  • They have a high energy content
  • The energy loss and heat production during digestion is lower with fats than with carbohydrates and proteins. For this reason, feeding oils is attractive in warm areas with high humidity
  • It reduces intestinal contents and water consumption
  • The glycemic index is lower, which reduces insulin fluctuations after eating

Positive influences of omega 3 fatty acids (essential fatty acids)

  • Better concentration
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Anti-inflammatory (DHA and EPA)
  • Better skin, coat and hoof quality
  • Better hormone balance
  • Better spermatogenesis (DHA)
  • Better vision
  • More elasticity in the tissues

Points of attention when feeding fats/oils;

  • A horse does not have a gallbladder. Therefore, gradually increase the amount of oil with no more than 100ml per feeding
  • Saturated vegetable oils are usually palm and coconut oil, from deforested rainforests
  • Unsaturated fats and oils quickly become rancid (oxidize) and are then harmful to the body (extra vitamin E is desirable to absorb this)

The fifth layer of the pyramid: supplementary feeds

These include concentrates, such as mueslis, balancers and supplements (but also vitamins, minerals and neutraceuticals).

In the book ‘The New Feeding Concept’ it is clearly explained what supplementary feeds are and how much of them you can feed.
